Teagan’s Literature Challenge to create a literary character in SL grabbed my attention. As soon as I saw it, I knew I wanted to do a character from my favorite author Charles de Lint, but I went back and forth on which one for a bit until finally deciding upon Jilly Coppercorn from his Newford short stories and novels. I might end up doing one or two others in the near future though because I had a lot of fun setting up SL Jilly.
Jilly is an artist who paints scenes and creatures from the land of the fae. Others might think she simply has an active imagination, but she’s been touched by magic and sees what others might not. She’s also a big-hearted free spirit who has never met a stranger and may seem a bit chaotic to someone who doesn’t really know her well. Charles de Lint has often included Jilly in stories set in his fictional town of Newford, and she’s very much the heart of the town and connected to just about everyone in some way.
My SL interpretation is based on my mind’s eye view of her and may not be 100% accurate to written descriptions of her. The shape is my usual one, and I’ve just dressed in the spirit of Jilly with paint-splattered clothing from Tres Blah and a loosely pulled-back bun with some paint brushes holding it all together. I chose this particular jewelry because it has a spiritual and organic feel to it, and the simple mix of leather and silver just seems like something Jilly might wear.
The easel is from Sway’s Creations, and if you haven’t been there, I recommend it as a place to find some unique animated props and furniture. There’s a Christmas tree to decorate, a sewing machine to operate, an animated pedicure set, and a variety of other items. There are also other items like collectible animated bears and Christmas decorations. It’s really worth checking out.
